As we approach the 2022 holiday season, we have the opportunity to support the local shops and businesses that have weathered through so much during this pandemic.
Here are four fairly easy ways to safely support local or small businesses this winter:
Shop local when possible for holiday gifts
Whether you’re buying tried-and-true favorites for nearby friends and family or surprising long-distance loved ones with something unique, consider purchasing from local businesses instead of national chains this holiday season. Some stores may be reopened, but many small businesses also have online shopping options. From more traditional items to branded merch to gift cards, there are many ways to support businesses in your area and add a personal touch to the gifts you’re giving this year.

Sustain your hobbies with local goods
During the pandemic, many of us started new hobbies or renewed existing passion projects. Regardless of which train you’ve hopped on (breadmaking, knitting, beading, weightlifting, fishing, painting, video gaming, etc.), it’s likely that your hobby requires supplies or gear. Local businesses may have exactly what you need to keep your activity going! There’s also a good chance that your hobbies that used to be in-person, like yoga classes, now have virtual equivalents.
Should You Turn Your Hobby into a Side Hustle?
Enjoy local cuisine from the comfort of your home
If you’re still leery of dining inside your favorite restaurant, grabbing some takeout to enjoy at home is a win-win. You get a night off from cooking and a local restaurant gets some needed business. This is also a great option to satisfy your holiday meal cravings, like roasted turkey, without all of the prep work and clean-up. Many restaurants may even offer fully prepared meals, from salads to desserts, for your holiday celebration.
Spread some holiday cheer
Tight on money on not buying holiday gifts? Totally fine! Purchasing from a local business is not the only way to show them some love this season. Engaging with your favorite local or small businesses online or on social media platforms by liking, commenting, leaving reviews or shout outs can give them exposure to attract new customers and retain loyal fans. Word-of-mouth referrals are very powerful and help both your connections and the business. Lastly, be kind and patient with your local business owners and let them know how much their goods or services mean to you.
