• Import Letter of Credit: A conditional payment guarantee provided by an importer’s bank to an exporter. The payment guarantee is conditional upon the exporter providing documentary evidence of the shipment of goods in accordance with the terms of the letter of credit.
• Export Letter of Credit: A contractual commitment by the foreign buyer’s bank to pay once an exporter ships the goods and presents the required documentation to the bank as evidence.
• Standby Letters of Credit: A bank’s commitment of payment by assuring a seller that the bank will make payment for the goods delivered if a buyer fails to pay. Commonly used to cover the risk of a contracting party not fulfilling any agreed obligations.
