1. Try new activitiesWinter offers opportunities for outdoor fun for all ages, and if you haven’t tried winter sports, you don’t know how much fun you’re missing! Skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, sledding, hockey, broomball, curling … the list goes on and on. Many activities require special equipment, but if you don’t own it and don’t want to buy before you know whether you’ll like the activity, you’ll find many places where you can rent skis, skates, etc. Or try a used sporting goods store for another low-cost option.
2. Learn to layerDressing in layers for cold weather can keep you safe and comfortable. It allows you to add or remove clothing as activities and weather dictate. Generally, you need three layers if you’re going to be active outdoors: one that wicks moisture away from your skin, one that insulates and one that protects you from snow, sleet, rain and wind.
3. AccessorizeHat or headband, scarf or fleece neck gaiter, gloves or mittens — there are myriad choices to suit your individual preferences. Be sure to consider not just your fashion statement, but the tremendous difference these accessories can make in your comfort level. Good socks and boots are important, too. And don’t forget sunglasses or goggles; snow reflects up to 85 percent of damaging UV rays.*
4. Winterize your carRegularly check your tire pressure, keep the gas tank at least half full at all times, replenish the windshield washer fluid frequently and generally be sure your car is in good operating condition. Keep it stocked with a bag of sand or kitty litter for traction, shovel, ice scraper, flashlight with extra batteries, water, high-energy snacks, first aid kit, blanket, matches and small candles, booster cables, cellphone adapter to plug into the lighter, and emergency flares and reflectors.
5. Stay safeKeep sidewalks and driveways clear of snow and ice. If you have to walk on snow and ice, wear good boots with nonslip tread soles. Walk like a penguin to avoid falls on ice — keep your feet wide and pointed out slightly, knees loose and slightly bent, arms extended to the side, take small steps and slow down. You might also consider using a cane or walking stick.
